Matakana is a lovely small town situated 10km north east of Warkworth and approximately one hours drive north of Auckland city. With booming residential development, Matakana and its surroundings have become a playground for wealthy Aucklanders. With massive development in the Omaha and Snells beach area, population has increased as well as the desire to own a lifestyle block. Matakana village has become a hub for markets, stores and bars.
The area has become well-known for the its production of premium wines. Almost all the vineyards in and around Matakana are on slopes, which helps to drain the clay soils. The area is traditionally a red wine growing region but white wines - especially Chardonnay and Pinot Gris have become popular. However the classic red varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinotage, Pinot Noir and Sangiovese are the meat of what is made here.
The size of the vineyards are usually quite small and boutique, choosing to focus on cellar door sales and tourism as a means to make money. Some of the winemakers in the area sell most of their wine through their winery/restaurant, others sell their wine throughout New Zealand and overseas.
Matakana is a relative newcomer to the wine industry but have won awards both in New Zealand and overseas. The region has increased its plantings in recent years which now encompasses some 32 vineyards, including 12+ wineries. Most of the vineyards offer wine tasting and are in close proximity to each other.
